Texas is viewed as one of the world’s centers of excellence for ophthalmology, and all Texans have access to these ophthalmologists. Individuals from other states and other countries travel to Texas to seek eye care from Texas ophthalmologists.
Texas features eight ophthalmological residency programs (soon to be nine with the nascent Wong Eye Institute in Austin). Nationwide, the total number of ophthalmology residents has increased by about 7 percent over the past decade. With the advent of new technology, including telemedicine and new therapies, ophthalmologists can lengthen the interval between visits for patients, freeing up schedules even more.
